The rapid expansion of urban space and population after two industrial revolutions has led to increasingly complex and unpredictable problems facing society today, such as environmental pollution, energy crisis, and food crisis. To create a new urban model that will serve as a blueprint for future urban renewal and development, it is necessary to revisit the historical process of urban development.

However, people in cities often struggle to adapt to traditional urban changes. Urban designers must improve the relationship between people and space after the bond has changed. This issue also determines the position of people in the new city of the future. To envision the future of people's lives in the city, the design must create a sustainable system and present the city as a vehicle used by people.

The concept of sustainable development shares many similarities with the hermitage life that ancient people aspired to for thousands of years. Therefore, the design envisions an idealized model consisting of three dimensions: the individual, the community, and the city; and the laws that govern its operation. By exploring the possibility of a new model of future 'edge city' under the existing concept of sustainability and with a spirit of optimism, the design aims to create a hedonistic sustainable settlement that is self-sufficient in resources.

To achieve this, the design proposes a model of collaboration between individuals, families, buildings, communities, and cities. After researching urban agglomerations in China, suitable areas between the city and the countryside were selected, where there will be a large population spillover from the city in the next 10-20 years. The project will eventually conduct an experiment to showcase the full picture of a sustainable living community.

BACKGROUND

Global warming and environmental pollution are pressing issues that cannot be ignored in modern times. Despite the issue of global warming being raised in the 20th century and the signing of the Paris Climate Agreement in 2016, there are still those who turn a blind eye to this problem. The development of modern urbanization and industrialization has resulted in social mobility and fragmentation, leading to the transformation of original community structures, the destruction of original spatial structures, and the loss of the spirit of place. This kind of community change is regarded as the "failure of community" or "disappearance of community." The interpersonal relationships in society are complex with rich content and complicated forms. This reflects the fact that in urban development, a place that has already formed an atmosphere of life unites people's hopes of gathering with each other.
